Dangers Lurking in your Dry Shampoo

You know the drill. You wash your hair. Take time to dry it and style it. Then, a day or two later, it gets greasy and oily! Now, you have to wash your hair and repeat the process all over again. Who has time to wash and dry hair everyday?
This is where dry shampoo comes in handy because it soaks up the oil that builds up in the hair when it is not washed.
The truth is, not all dry shampoos are created equally.

A Closer Look Inside Dry Shampoo

When should you use dry shampoo?
After a few days without washing your hair, “your scalp secretes a mixture of lipids called sebum” which causes your hair to get oily. [1]

Dry shampoo contains ingredients that help absorb the oil in your hair.

In an article by Wired, writer Annie Sneed explains what are some of the ingredients inside your dry shampoo, including:

  • Cornstarch- “White, powdery cornstarch binds to sebum’s fatty-acid chains through weak electric interactions called van der Waals forces.” [1]
  • Kaolin- “soft clay absorbs grease and cloaks the shine of unwashed locks. Its hydrous aluminum silicates coat hair strands, reducing their reflectivity and creating a matte look.” [1]
  • Laminaria saccharina Extract- “(made from a type of brown algae) sometimes used to induce labor—it absorbs moisture and expands, aiding dilation…” [1]
  • Magnesium Stearate- “This anticaking agent coats the surface of starch molecules to keep them from clumping…” [1]
  • Denatured Alcohol- “Ethanol blended with other chemicals (usually methanol) produces a noxious, flammable brew that’s an excellent solvent for cornstarch and kaolin. The liquid alcohol suspends solids without dissolving them and carries the oil-absorbing particles out of the bottle when dispensed. It evaporates quickly after it hits hair roots and absorbs body heat—the endothermic process creates a cooling effect that soothes an itchy, dirty scalp.” [4]
  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas- “Most people opt for spray-on dry shampoo, which uses a propellant to force chemicals out of the can and nebulize them into a fine mist. Don’t use dry shampoo near an open flame—LPG is highly flammable, so you could end up with your hair on fire.” [1]

Another ingredient sometimes found in dry shampoo is talc. According to a Healthline article by Stanborough, “Talc is a mineral that, in its natural state, can contain particles of asbestos, a known carcinogen.” [2]  This has raised some safety concerns for some consumers about whether there may be “a possible link between asbestos-free talcum powder and ovarian cancer.” [2]

How Harmful Ingredients in Some Dry Shampoo’s Can Damage Hair
By using dry shampoo products containing harmful ingredients, your dry shampoo can actually lead to damage to your hair and scalp. According to a Healthline article, writer Stanborough, explains some of the possible negative effects to your hair and scalp, including:

  1.  Possible Hair Breakage

Choose a dry shampoo without “alcohols” as it causes hair to become dry. “When your hair is dry, the individual fibers can crack and snag on each other when you comb or style your hair, leading to breakage.” [2]

  1.  May Clog Hair Follicles

You should use your dry shampoo as directed. If you overuse dry shampoo or leave it in your hair for long periods of time, it will result in build up in your hair and scalp.  “An accumulation of styling products can make your scalp itch. It’s possible the buildup could also lead to folliculitis. This is a bacterial or fungal infection in the hair follicle.” [2]

  1.  Dandruff and Scaly Skin

Dry shampoo is not a replacement for shampoo or conditioner. It is important to wash your hair with water, as dry shampoo is a waterless product. “So, if you’re leaving dry shampoo on your scalp, you’re also leaving the oils it’s absorbed. Oils also feed on a strain of fungus known as Malassezia, which can cause a red, scaly scalp condition called seborrheic dermatitis.” [2]
